Basic clause of ISO 45001

ISO 45001:2018 is an international standard for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) management systems. It provides a framework for organizations to improve OH&S performance and reduce work-related injuries and illnesses. The standard specifies requirements for a management system, including a systematic approach to managing OH&S risks, regular OH&S performance evaluations, and continual improvement.

The standard is based on the Annex SL framework, which is common for all new and revised ISO management system standards. This allows for integration with other ISO management system standards, such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management).

ISO 45001:2018 replaces the previous standard OHSAS 18001 and is intended to help organizations provide safe and healthy working conditions, while also improving OH&S performance and legal compliance. The standard is applicable to all organizations, regardless of size, industry, or location.

Certification to ISO 45001:2018 demonstrates a commitment to OH&S and provides assurance to stakeholders that the organization has implemented a robust OH&S management system.

ISO 45001:2018 consists of 10 clauses, each addressing a specific aspect of OH&S management:

  1. Scope - Defines the applicability of the standard and the requirements for OH&S management systems.

  2. Normative references - Outlines the standards and documents referenced within ISO 45001:2018.

  3. Terms and definitions - Defines key terms used in the standard.

  4. Context of the organization - Requires organizations to consider internal and external factors that may impact OH&S performance.

  5. Leadership and worker participation - Requires the commitment and involvement of senior management and workers in OH&S management.

  6. Planning - Requires organizations to establish objectives, policies, and processes for OH&S management.

  7. Support - Requires organizations to provide resources, competency, communication, and documented information to support OH&S management.

  8. Operation - Requires organizations to identify and control OH&S risks and opportunities, as well as monitor and measure OH&S performance.

  9. Performance evaluation - Requires organizations to evaluate OH&S performance and opportunities for improvement.

  10. Improvement - Requires organizations to implement corrective and preventive actions and continual improvement of OH&S management.
